Raising the flag to salute the Commonwealth
Everyone is invited to attend the raising of the Commonwealth Flag outside of Great Yarmouth Town Hall on Monday, March 14, as part of a national initiative to show commitment to this global family of nations.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council is marking Commonwealth Day 2022, alongside local authorities, community groups, charities and others around the world.
The Commonwealth Day flag will be raised outside Great Yarmouth Town Hall at 10am by the Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Cllr Adrian Thompson. There will also be a short blessing led by the Mayor's Chaplain, Rev Canon Simon Ward, of Great Yarmouth Minster. All are welcome to attend.
The initiative enables communities to become involved and join with others in associating themselves with widespread public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, appreciation of its values, and the opportunities offered for friendship and co-operation with Commonwealth citizens around the world.
The day will be marked with events around the world, and given that 2022 is Her Majesty The Queen's Jubilee Year, there will also be a special focus this year on the role service plays in the lives of people and communities across the Commonwealth.
Celebration for Commonwealth Day, a special service for Commonwealth Day celebrating the Queen's Platinum jubilee, will be broadcast live from Westminster Abbey on BBC One from 2pm, with the service taking place from 2.40pm - 3.45pm.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is Head of the Commonwealth, a voluntary association of 54 independent and equal countries. It is home to 2.5 billion people, and includes both advanced economies and developing countries. The Commonwealth's roots go back to the British Empire, but today any country can join the modern Commonwealth. The last country to join the Commonwealth was Rwanda in 2009.
