Great Yarmouth Spring Clean (update)
Great Yarmouth is set for a Spring Clean on Saturday 13 April and anyone is welcome to join in. Organised by the Civic Society of Great Yarmouth and the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust it is part of the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean Initiative.
There will be two sessions at 10am and 1pm, each lasting for about 2 hours. The meeting point will be in the Market Place outside the banks and volunteers are advised to come before those times to register. The areas to be cleaned will include the much loved Heritage Walk Trails and some of the guides will give some historical information during the litter pick. This is an opportunity for the whole community to come together.
The Civic Society is encouraging everyone to get involved in helping to keep our town clean. Many people already report problems with litter and rubbish to the Council's Environmental Rangers on their Apps. The more information they receive, the more they will be able to do.
There are so many clubs and societies across the Borough and just a little time clearing a football pitch, picnic area or just the frontage on the street where they live will make all the difference. There are a number of litter picking initiatives taking place across the Borough which would welcome more people taking part.
Hugh Sturzaker, Chair of the Civic Society said "Prevention is better than cure and everyone needs to take responsibility by not dropping litter or cigarette butts and clearing up after their dogs. We would like to see all business and homeowners taking a pride in their properties and not only looking after their building but also any space in front of it including the adjoining pavement. If everyone did this the town would look so much better and the Council could divert the resources they pay out for litter collection and street cleaning on other much needed services. Let us make Great Yarmouth the cleanest seaside resort in the country!"
Rachel Harrison, Project Co-ordinator of the Great Yarmouth PreservationTrust, said "The Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust is pleased to be able to support and contribute to this Civic Society event through our Making Waves Together and the Coastal Revival Funding for the Rows Project. This funding has already enabled us to support a weekly volunteer litter picking group called "Street Level" that meets on Tuesdays to litter pick some of the Rows and surrounding areas and we will be there to support the Great British Spring Clean Event in contributing to positive change in the Borough."
The organisers are most grateful to the various groups who are helping to put on this Spring Clean and to the assistance of the Great Yarmouth Borough Council, the Great Yarmouth Borough Services, Harbour Radio and the Town Centre Partnership. In addition it welcomes the financial support of the Making Waves Together and Coast Revival Funds for the Rows Project of the Great Yarmouth PreservationTrust. We are also extremely grateful to IJustWannaCandy of Market Gates, the Market Row Cafe and Mocha Cafe in Regent Street for providing bottles of water for the participants as well as discounts on drinks.
