Arts Festival Wins National Award
Great Yarmouth Arts Festival has been awarded £10,000 by the Community Fund of the National Lottery. Announcing the award, Hugh Sturzaker, Chair of the Arts Festival, said "We are absolutely delighted to have received this award and would like to thank the millions of lottery players whose weekly payments have enabled the National Lottery to make this award.
"The grant has been made to help run the Carnival which is the most expensive part of the Arts Festival which is run by volunteers. In the weeks leading up to the Carnival we run many
workshops in which people of all ages learn to make costumes, banners and learn to play instruments. This year the Carnival's theme is energy, reflecting the fact that Great Yarmouth is one of the main centres for energy production in the country. We welcome anyone or any group who would like to participate in the Carnival.
"It is going to be a great day starting off with kite flying on the beach and the procession starting from the Venetian Waterways at 11am. After weaving through the town the procession will come to St. George's Theatre when the Community Fair will start at the Library and Festa Fiesta - overseen by SeaChange Arts - takes off in King Street and in and around the Drill House. This will continue until midnight."
The Festival has also received funding through LookSideways East which is funded by the Local Enterprise Partnership, the Arts Council and Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils. Hugh Sturzaker said "In spite of this funding we would welcome more from local offshore and other businesses to make this a really spectacular Festival. It is an opportunity for people to see what great local talent we have and to enjoy the international acts that will be taking part. This is an opportunity for everyone to come together to enjoy themselves and to develop a great community spirit. By doing so we can encourage people from outside the Borough to visit the town and so help the local economy."
