Project to create Underground Gallery in Great Yarmouth underpasses

Curated by Reprezent Project, the work will see five local and international artists revitalise the underpasses at Fuller's Hill and North Quay and turn them into the Underground Gallery, including one tunnel as a unique changing display of community street art. It is expected that the art will all be in place by Saturday.

This is part of Making Waves Together, a wider partnership project led jointly by Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Waveney District Council, and funded by the national Great Place Scheme, which is seeing communities and organisations in both areas work together to boost the cultural offer and drive cultural re-imagination as a way of supporting success in the seaside towns.

Enhancing links to and around the town centre, Underground Gallery also supports the Town Centre Masterplan, an exciting commercially-realistic vision to enhance the historic town centre as a destination where more people choose to live, work, invest and spend their leisure time and money.

The two underpasses will have different concepts:

The Vision Sub in Fuller's Hill underpass will reflect the visionary era we are living in now and pay homage to Making Waves Together and the way it has brought partners together to enhance the cultural offer in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

The Passion Sub in North Quay underpass will act as a more traditional gallery and will have a six-month rotational exhibition programme. Artist will be invited to explore a diversity of themes, from celebrating the local history and heritage of circus, to raising awareness of environmental issues. It will also celebrate other cultures, as well as raising awareness of other contemporary issues.

Cllr Barry Coleman, chairman of the economic development committee, said: "This is a really exciting project which will revitalise one of the least attractive parts of our streetscape with dynamic and unique community art, while boosting our cultural offer and supporting the wider town centre regeneration. We have some amazingly talented local artists within our communities and I look forward to seeing what they create."
