Public Spaces Protection Order No 4: anti-social behaviour
Live from 1 April 2025
The Great Yarmouth Borough Council Public Spaces Protection Order (Number 1 of 2025) came into force on 1 April 2025 and continues for a period of three years from that date unless extended under section 60 of the Act.
After a public consultation Great Yarmouth Borough Council introduced a new anti-social behaviour Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to tackle some of the behaviours that were being exhibited in the borough. This PSPO would also include activities that had been previously covered in the Public Spaces Protection Order No 1 that was revoked on the date that the new order came into force.
The Public Spaces Protection Order No 4 2025 which covers the whole of the district of Great Yarmouth came into force from 01 April 2025 for a period of three years. (Revoking the PSPO No 1 Alcohol)
The behaviours that are controlled by the Public Spaces Protection order are behaviours that have been raised by the residents of Great Yarmouth as causing issues across the Borough and disregard for the control measures can lead to further action such as a £100 fixed penalty notice (reduced to £80 if paid within 10 days) or court action.
The behaviours that will not be tolerated under this PSPO are:
- drinking alcohol or having an open alcohol container in a public place (not licenced premises)
- requests for money or other property
- urination, defecation in other than a public convenience
- spitting
- abandoning belongings
- cycles, e-scooters and e- bikes in pedestrian areas
Any person who is found to be in breach of this PSPO and/or causing nuisance and annoyance to others in the vicinity can be given a direction to leave the area by a route defined by the authorising officer with direction not to return within a 12 hour period.
