Winners of LGC Council of the Year 2024
Through foresight and vision for its place and people this council has delivered tangible regeneration and impressive economic development whilst also leaning in to every area that could improve lives for its population, even if not its direct responsibility.
The judges were unanimous in their view that the kindness, energy and commitment on show from staff, members and partners is infectious and a beacon for the sector. This council is a perfectly timed example of how a small local authority with a relatively modest budget can punch well above its weight through leveraging significant financial investment but also partnership capital.
Testimonials
Claire - Learning and Organisational Development Advisor
Having visited Great Yarmouth lots as a child and then joining the Council, I am so proud to be a member of the team. When the Council talks about being ambitious, it really is. Collectively everyone works so hard to improve the Borough, surrounded by so many people with the passion, drive and enthusiasm to do the job well, it's inspiring.
I am so thankful to have the opportunity to work at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, and to be part of the team.
Dhanni - Housing Assessment Officer
I have always had holidays up in Great Yarmouth as a child, loving the seafront, arcades, sea etc and wondered what it would be like to move/work here. I joined the Council at a young age, and immediately fit in. Everyone was so welcoming and I just love being around my team members. The job is varied with no day being the same, each case load is unique in their own way. I take great pride in my work and am proud to work for Great Yarmouth Borough Council.
Michaela - Marketing and Engagement Manager
Born and bred in Great Yarmouth working for the Council was something I never envisioned and like many had preconceptions. However, I am now extremely proud to be part of an organisation who are really driving change for this fantastic town, things are really happening and for the greater good.
Toby - Strategic Planner
I would thoroughly recommend Great Yarmouth Borough Council to anyone looking for friendly, positive and supportive working environment, particularly for anyone looking at taking up an apprenticeship. As a planner, the Borough has proved an excellent place to develop a diverse range of skills with non-homogenous landscapes and demographics.
I have benefited from a genuinely supportive team and from the many colleagues around the organisation that I have already engaged with during my relatively short time with the Council so far. This has extended to proactively embedding technical knowledge gained from studying with practical experiences gained 'on the job'. I'm looking forward to continuing to take advantage of the opportunities afforded to develop my skills further.
Robert - Planning Officer
I've been at Great Yarmouth Borough Council since August 2019 and started my master's apprenticeship in January 2021. This was one of the things that attracted me to Great Yarmouth Borough Council; the opportunity to develop further professionally and the support to do this as well. My manager has been really good, allowing me enough time for university but also discussing issues that are brought up in lectures from a different perspective.
Another thing that attracted me to Great Yarmouth Borough Council was due to how diverse the borough was and the range of applications that I deal with. It has allowed me to have a wider understanding of planning and more holistic experience compared to what I would have got elsewhere.
