Conservation areas

A conservation area is 'an area of special architectural and historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance', as defined by the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.

We have a duty to assess those areas that are considered to fall within the above definition and to name them as conservation areas. There are no standard criteria by which an area is designated. They may form groups of buildings, open spaces, trees, historic street patterns, village greens or features of historic or archaeological interest. It is the character of areas rather than individual buildings that these conservation areas seek to enhance.

A Conservation Areas interactive map (opens new window) - providing visual and supporting data relating to the conservation areas in the Borough - is available. Enter an address or postcode in the search box to determine if it falls within one of the Borough's conservation areas. Alternatively, click or tap any of the blue polygon areas to reveal the details of that conservation area.

There are 19 conservation areas within the Borough of Great Yarmouth. To view an individual map of any of these conservation areas, use the links in the table below. You may also find the work conducted by Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust (opens new window) of interest.
