Great Yarmouth Borough Council's first ever electric car charging point is a success
Great Yarmouth's first ever rapid charging point for electric cars, located at Fullers Hill car park, is a success, Great Yarmouth Borough Council is proud to announce.
The Rapid Charge Point first opened to the public in June 2019. Since then it has been utilised 227 times by about 100 different users, equivalent to saving a total of 12 trees or two tons of CO2 emissions.
The charging point, the only rapid one in the area, can give vehicles up to 80% charge in just 20 to 30 minutes in comparison to the 4-5 hours a typical fast charging point takes for a similar charge.
The unit is easily operated, with the user scanning their smartphone App or bank card on the reader to begin. Next, the screen gives the user a step by step guide on how to use the charger. After the charge is complete, the screen shows the driver a charging transaction summary which includes the total time charging and the total kWh.
Following the initial charging point being so positively received, the council applied for further funding from OLEV (Office for Low Emission Vehicles) to allow additional electric vehicle charge points to be installed across several council-owned car parks. The funding was applied for with the assistance of Energy Saving Trust, a leading and trusted organisation helping people save energy. The recently confirmed grant will allow for a further ten charge points across five locations.
Cllr Graham Plant, chairman of the economic development committee and deputy council leader, said: "Great Yarmouth Borough Council is proud to support the usage of electric vehicles in the borough, which will help reduce the carbon emissions that have a damaging effect on the environment.
"The council is always looking to make the borough more sustainable and are proud to be leading the nation in renewable energy; first with our offshore wind energy sector and now with our rapid charging point.
"With more charging points in the pipeline, the aim of these installations is to increase the confidence of local residents and visitors that Great Yarmouth can provide those who use electronic cars with suitable and accessible charging points."
