New beach huts for Gorleston recommended for final approval
People will soon have the opportunity to buy a brand new beach hut at Gorleston from Great Yarmouth Borough Council - if the project is approved by the council's policy and resources committee on Tuesday, July 31.
A report asks the committee to give the final go-ahead to the council's project to build a first phase of 70 new beach huts along Gorleston's Lower Esplanade, bringing a great new offer for residents and tourists alike, as well as generating additional funding to support important public services.
The colourful new huts, facing Gorleston's famous golden sands, would measure three metres by three metres, including a veranda at the front, and would be built of wood with a pitched roof. Planning permission is already in place.
Under an associated 25-year ground rent lease, the new owners would benefit from access to a dedicated amenity block, with wash basins and toilets. The report recommends that individual units be offered for sale through an estate agent, which would independently value and market the beach huts to the public. The estate agent would be chosen through a formal tender process.
Once the estate agent is appointed in early August, the availability of the beach huts would be formally advertised in the press, to include the cost, method of purchase and terms and conditions, in order to ensure a fair and transparent process. Anyone who has already expressed an interest would be notified of the advert and process.
Cllr Carl Smith, deputy council leader, said: "The popularity of beach huts at UK coastal resorts has seen a revival in recent years. Indeed, there has already been major interest expressed from potential purchasers for beach huts at Gorleston.
"While the final decision is for the committee, the report highlights that this project has the potential to further boost Gorleston as a popular destination, and provide a great new facility for residents and visitors alike, who will both have the opportunity to buy the huts through a fair and transparent process.
"The beach huts would also compliment the other significant investment we've undertaken recently at Gorleston seafront, including the complete refurbishment of the Pier Head toilets to include a Changing Places facility, and the new splashpad which is nearing completion."
