Traffic barriers come down as Market Place improvement work nears completion

Great Yarmouth Borough Council has announced that traffic management barriers in the town's Market Place have been taken down ahead of the completion of major works to improve the area.

Traffic management barriers have been taken down in Great Yarmouth Market Place

The barriers have been in place from the former Palmers department store up to the Nat West Bank building at the junction of the Conge since last summer while the contractors, Tarmac, installed new paving and landscaping in the Market Place.

With work on target for completion in time for the Easter holidays and the town's annual Easter Fair, the removal of the barriers marks a significant point in the schedule.

A spokesperson for Great Yarmouth Borough Council said: ''We are delighted the barriers have come down. They were essential for public safety, but people can now see how this significant project to improve the Market Place will really enhance the area.

''We'd like to thank everyone for their patience as our contractors work to finish the regeneration on schedule.''

The work to install new paving, benches, lighting and planters has included de-cluttering and re-landscaping and is designed to create a high-quality environment, encouraging people to spend more time in the town centre supporting shopping, dining and other activities, while preserving the historic character of the town centre.

The small amount of work that will remain to be completed after Easter includes repairs to the cobbled car park and the final connection of lighting in the southern end of the Market Place. These works will be carried out in segregated areas and won't affect the operations of market traders.

The project has been funded with finance from the Government's Future High Street Fund, which aims to renew and reshape town centres and high streets in a way that drives economic growth, improves experience and ensures long-term sustainability.
