Beach Coach Station car park to shut for three weeks for site investigations to be carried out

Great Yarmouth's Beach Coach station car park is being closed for three weeks while site investigations are carried out.

The car park, off Nelson Road North, will be shut to all traffic from Monday, January 27, until Friday, February 14, so contractors - Harrisons Environmental - can evaluate ground conditions ahead of a potential council housing development on the land.

A spokesperson for Great Yarmouth Borough Council said: ''Beach Coach Station car park is on the site of former a railway station. This means a number of pits will need to be dug to make sure there are no issues from former tracks, platforms and buildings that might affect any future development.

''While these investigations take place, it is not safe or practical for the car park to remain open and clear signage is in place. We hope the impact on people is limited, but we are sorry for any inconvenience the work might cause. Full information about alternative car parks nearby can be found here: https://www.great-yarmouth.gov.uk/article/2296/Where-can-I-park-in-town.''

The site investigations come after Great Yarmouth Borough Council's Cabinet took a decision in October to consider an option for new council housing at the car park.

Subject to planning permission and funding, the site has the potential to deliver about 50 new council homes for local people.

As part of any potential development of Beach Coach Station car park, the council will be aiming to provide alternative parking facilities at new, convenient locations for visitors and residents.

Once investigations are complete, initial designs will be drawn up before a full public consultation on any proposals takes place.

During the site investigations work, access to Jubilee Court remains in place for residents and visitors and the charging points for electric vehicles are still available for use by the public.
