People invited to attend Great Yarmouth Borough Council service to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

People are being invited to attend Great Yarmouth Borough Council's annual service to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Holocaust Memorial Day is on January 27

Holocaust Memorial Day occurs every year on January 27 - the anniversary of the liberation of the largest Nazi death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945 - and this year's service will take place at the Blackfriars Cemetery in Blackfriars Road, Great Yarmouth.

The service will be led by Revd Simon Ward. He will be joined by the Mayor of Great Yarmouth, Councillor Paula Waters-Bunn, and the President of the Great Yarmouth branch of the Royal British Legion, Josie Fitzgerald.

Members of the public are invited to join the service, which starts at 11am on Monday, January 27. People are asked to arrive a few minutes early to ensure they are present before the service begins.

Organised by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT), this year's theme for the Memorial Day is For a Better Future. The theme aims to highlight that everyone has an opportunity to take action for a better future where people are not suffering prejudice or persecution because of their faith, ethnicity or other characteristic.

Her Worship the Mayor, Councillor Waters-Bunn, said: ''We hope as many people as possible will be able to join us for the annual service to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. This year's theme is important and we know there are many things we can all do to create a better future for everyone.

''We can speak up against Holocaust and genocide denial and distortion, challenge prejudice and encourage others to learn about the Holocaust and more recent genocides.''

HDMT exists to highlight how The Holocaust threatened the fabric of civilisation and how genocide should be resisted every day. It says the world often feels fragile and vulnerable and urges people not to be complacent.

Every year on Holocaust Memorial Day across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future.
