Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government visit to Great Yarmouth
Great Yarmouth Borough Council has welcomed a visit from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) for a tour designed to show what can be achieved when adequate funding is provided and highlighting what issues residents consider important, but that require additional Government investment.
During the visit, guests saw some of the major regeneration projects underway in the town, including the new library and university due to open next spring in the former Palmers department store, new landscaping and paving in the Market Place and the Conge, where there are plans for almost 100 new homes.
Councillor Carl Smith, leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: ''We were delighted to show our guests some of the fantastic work taking place here.
''We were able to demonstrate that - when Government supports the council - we have been and are able to deliver significant regeneration with partnership working that is making a real difference to the lives of people in the borough.
''The sums we have received via Levelling Up funding, Future High Streets funding, Town Deals Fund and other Government sources has helped us deliver a range of hugely successful work that is reinventing our public spaces - such as the new Marina Centre, the covered market and the revitalised Venetian Water Gardens.''
Councillor Trevor Wainwright, leader of the Labour group at GYBC, said: ''With cross-party working and stakeholder engagement we have a robust strategic long-term vision for the borough.
''There are challenges in Great Yarmouth - around housing, for instance. But there is also great opportunity in the offshore industry, tourism and manufacturing. We are determined to nurture new jobs and make our residents proud of where they live.''
The councillors also explained that, with Government support, the council is well placed to build learning networks to finesse its ambitions with detailed planning around what matters to residents, drives economic growth and raises aspiration for everyone in the borough.
The visit comes in the wake of the council's new Long Term Plan which it submitted to the Government in the summer after the town was one of more than 50 locations selected to receive additional funding.
The new Government recently committed to providing up to £20m for each of the towns selected and Great Yarmouth is waiting to see how much it will be allocated.
