Man is fined for illegally fly tipping wardrobe in Great Yarmouth

A 32-year-old man has been fined £200 after he was captured on CCTV dumping a broken-up wardrobe in the centre of Great Yarmouth.

The man illegally disposed of the wardrobe near the communal bins in George St car park at the bottom of Broad Row. The bins are only for authorised residents but have become a regular target for unsightly fly tipping.

Designed for regular household waste, bulky items are often dumped illegally close to the communal bins. Fly tipping at the site recently has included furniture, mattresses, settees, tables, chairs, televisions, toys, clothes and even commercial waste.

Councillor Paul Wells, Great Yarmouth Borough Council's portfolio holder for Environment and Sustainability, Licensing and Waste, said: ''Residents in the area repeatedly suffer at the hands of people illegally dumping waste close to their bins.

''It is unsightly, attracts gulls and vermin who rip bags and is expensive to clear. We know people are working so hard to keep their communities tidy and, where possible, we will always prosecute people who have no consideration for others and the environment.''

The man was caught on film making several trips to dump the wardrobe just before 11am on October 13. The council said bulky items of waste should always be disposed of legally and can be taken to the Caister Recycling Centre in Pump Lane or collected by a licensed waste carrier.

The man was interviewed under caution, admitted the offence and was fined £200 under section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Because he paid early, the fine was reduced to £110.
