Hemsby beach toilets to be reopened

Until recently the facilities had been opened and maintained by the owners of local businesses but had remained closed this year. The council had urged anyone prepared to help in reopening the block to get in touch as soon as possible.

And now, after discussions between businesses and the council, a new arrangement has been put in place which means the facilities will open up for visitors later this week. Representatives of Hemsby businesses have said they will open, close and clean the toilets, with GYBC providing cleaning materials and other support.

Lyndon Bevan, owner of The Lacon Arms and MB's, said: ''We are very pleased we have been able to find a swift solution which means people visiting the beach in Hemsby once again have access to toilets close to the beach.

''There was a long-standing agreement in place whereby some of our wonderful businesses in the village had been happy to look after the beach facilities, but due to repeated vandalism of the block it simply became too difficult to keep it open. We hope people show respect for the service because we know how important it is to the community.

''I'd like to thank the council for undertaking the repairs and maintenance required to re-open the block and the businesses for stepping up once again. We are delighted the facilities are available once more.''
