Selective Licensing Scheme
Selective Licencing was introduced into a designated area (Nelson Ward) within the borough on 7 January 2019 for period of 5 years. The scheme required landlords of most private rented housing in this area to be licensed and meet conditions around health and safety and standards.
The Council worked with partners to deliver the project, carrying out inspections to identify and work with landlords to improve the conditions within the borough.
The Selective Licensing scheme ended as of 7 January 2024 and there will be no requirement for properties within this ward to be licensed.
Landlords who rent out or let residential accommodation that is not a Mandatory Licencable HMO (House in multiple occupation) in the borough will not be required to apply for a Selective Licence from the Council.
The Council are looking at the feasibility of implementing a new extended scheme which builds on its successes and continues to help tackle issues which can be caused as a result of high density private rented housing.
