New campaign launched to encourage people to keep our beaches clean

The beaches of Great Yarmouth borough have long been a cherished destination for locals and visitors alike. Their natural beauty and golden sands providing an oasis of relaxation and recreation. However, as the popularity of the beaches continues to grow, so does the need to protect them from litter and other pollution.

The new campaign highlights the importance of correct waste disposal, including the use of designated recycling bins and encouraging the reduction of single-use plastics.

The council has strategically positioned waste bins at convenient locations along the seafronts of the borough, ensuring they are easily accessible to everyone. By increasing the number of bins and improving their visibility, it hopes to encourage people to dispose of waste responsibly.

The Environmental Rangers first approach to littering and fly tipping is always to educate and support members of the public about their actions. With a strong and proven track record of enforcement to protect the environment, the council takes littering and fly tipping very seriously.

Under the Prime Minister's Action Plan to clamp down on environmental crimes and build stronger communities, the maximum amount those found guilty will increase. The Fixed Penalty Notice for littering will rise from £150 to £500.

Councillor Paul Wells, Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Sustainability, Licensing and Waste at Great Yarmouth Borough Council, said: "The council is committed to ensuring that waste bins are regularly emptied and maintained to prevent overflow and potential littering.

"Our wide, clean, sandy beaches are some of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in East Anglia, with miles of soft sand even at high tide. Working with the community, the council wants to keep the beaches perfect for lazing the days away in summer, as well as ideal for walking at any time of the year."
